Coming alongside of someone going through a trial/crisis:

Sometimes life hits us hard and what we really need is someone to be present. We don’t need preaching, we don’t need a curriculum, we just need a friend. If you are meeting with someone who is going through a struggle or healing from some grief or pain, be sure to listen intently, take mental notes, and pray with them, but don't feel obligated to solve their problems. Follow up with them from time to time to encourage them along the way. Maybe you can take a look at our Resource Page to find a book to read together. You’ll need to discern if their needs run deeper than what you have to offer. You don’t have to be the hero and you don’t need to pretend that you are a counelor (unless you happen to be one!). Connect them to a support group, some good Christian counseling, or perhaps you might read a book together on a topic relevant to their needs. See this list of attached support resources.
